The BCCI’s Controversial Stance on Family Visits
Former BCCI national selector, Saba Karim, provides insight into the newly implemented SOP pertaining to family interactions during overseas cricket tours, which significantly limits players’ family time. This rule by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) aims at balancing focus on professional commitments with personal lives.
Understanding the New Rule
Under BCCI’s latest regulations, the immediate family members of cricket players — their spouses and children — are allowed to accompany them only for two weeks following the initial fortnight of a tour lasting more than 45 days. For shorter tours, the duration allowed for family visits is capped at a week.
Player Reactions to the New Constraints
The stipulation has stirred mixed feelings among the players. Saba Karim pointed out that while it’s crucial for players to spend time with their families, finding an optimal balance is necessary. “The differing needs of players must be considered alongside the historical context of these regulations. It is imperative for the BCCI and the players to achieve a harmonious balance,” he noted.
Virat Kohli’s Perspective
Virat Kohli, a prominent figure in Indian cricket, has openly expressed his dissatisfaction with the limitations imposed on family time. At a recent event, Kohli emphasized the importance of normalcy and the ability to decompress with family between games. “The presence of family not only offers emotional support but also allows players to treat their professional responsibilities with a clear, focused mind,” he expressed.
Anticipating Innovations in the Indian Premier League
Beyond the immediate concerns with family policies, Saba also commented on the ongoing developments in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He predicted the emergence of new talents who are likely to shine in the 18th edition of the IPL, highlighting players like Ashutosh Sharma, Vignesh Puthur, and Vipraj Nigam for their impressive early performances. “We are just at the start of what promises to be a record-breaking season filled with memorable performances,” he added.
