Rajasthan Royals’ Early Season Woes: Is Poor Auction Strategy to Blame?

Rajasthan Royals Face Tough Start in IPL 2025

Former Indian wicketkeeper-batter Robin Uthappa has voiced concerns about Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) team composition following sequential losses in their initial games of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season. After their defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad and then by the reigning champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Uthappa suggests a critical reflection and analysis of their auction strategy might be necessary.

Assessing the Team’s Composition

Rajasthan Royals added 14 new players during the last mega auction held in Jeddah. Despite this, they are struggling to find the right synergy amongst their squad, especially within their starting eleven. While the batting lineup seems formidable with players like Sanju Samson and Yashasvi Jaiswal, their bowling department, including Jofra Archer and Sandeep Sharma, appears less convincing.

A Record-Breaking Challenge

Jofra Archer’s return to cricket after a prolonged absence was marked by a rough start as he conceded 76 runs in four overs against Sunrisers Hyderabad – a record for the most expensive spell in IPL history.

“Reflecting on their auction strategy is urgent, especially considering their current bowling lineup weaknesses,” Uthappa commented on JioHotstar. He emphasized Archer’s struggle in regaining form after his injury hiatus, highlighting the impact on mental and physical readiness critical to competitive sports.

Missed Opportunities at the Bat

Highlighting other critical moments, Uthappa discussed Yashasvi Jaiswal’s dismissal for 29 runs in a crucial game where RR set a score of 151/9. “Jaiswal had a chance to anchor the innings but failed to seize the moment, which was vital given the not-so-favorable batting conditions,” Uthappa explained.

Opponents’ Strong Response

In response, Quinton de Kock’s unbeaten 97, which included a dazzling array of eight fours and six sixes, led his team to a comfortable victory against RR, chasing down a target of 152 with eight wickets in hand.
